Blues Off Top After Leicester Win
Saturday, 20th Apr 2024 17:17

Mixed news for Town from Saturday’s fixtures with Leicester City winning and returning to the top of the table and Southampton defeated.

The Foxes rode their luck and missed a penalty as they beat profligate West Brom 2-1 at the King Power Stadium at lunchtime to move two points ahead of the Blues in second with both sides having three games to play.

The Saints, who travel to face Leicester in a rearranged match on Tuesday, once again showed their soft underbelly as Cardiff City came from behind to beat them 2-1 at the Cardiff City Stadium, the winning goal coming in the 96th minute, echoing both Town’s away game against the Bluebirds and their home match with the Hampshire side.

Fourth-placed Southampton are now five points behind the Blues, also having played 43 matches, with their goal difference three worse than Town’s.

The Blues aren’t in action this weekend with their scheduled opponents Coventry City in FA Cup semi-final action against Manchester United tomorrow, while third-placed Leeds United are at Middlesbrough on Monday.

Right now, all level on games played, we’re in an incredible position… not only would we have took this at the start of the season, we’d have took it 4 games ago… still all in our hands. Just do better than Leeds, and in doing so we wont have to worry about Southampton. COYBsss!!!!!

Not sure Soton losing was good for us. A draw might have given them more to play for. Now they need 3 wins and that is very unlikely to be enough. Let's just hope they give their all vs Leicester and Leeds anyway.

Think I miscalculated a bit there. Soton clearly still have plenty to play for vs L & L. Someone has to lose points in these encounters.

Whatever happens(just win 3 games please you boys in blue) we have had another season to be very proud of and the progression will continue all credit to everyone on and off the field lets hope when we play Huddersfield it's still in our hands then we can rock the building and see the boys home!! i can still remember standing on my milk crate in the old Churchmans stand when the champions did a lap of honour in 61/62 season after beating Villa 2-0 lets hope it can be repeated shortly C.O.Y.B

Be nice if Saints do the business(as long as we do) they come up with us i would love it if Leicester and Leeds stay down after their snide comments about us!!!

Great results today. Southampton need to beat Leicester and Leeds now so as long as we win our 3 remaining games I believe we will be champions on the final day at Portman Road.

I see it as the best result possible for us. Saints now have to beat Leicester, who weren't convincing against West Brom today, and then may have to beat Leeds to get in the top 2. We don't have to worry about any of that though, just need to get something out of the next 2 games and not falter at home to Huddersfield. Simples.

looking good lets hope all injured are fit and ready, the huge pressure is still on the ex 1st div teams as they have all the cash and players and are expected to get back up, we have no pressure as most would have been happy with a mid table finish...the cracks are opening everywhere in the others, lets hope we can just relax ,laugh and win.....

I believe Leicester will now go on and be promoted. Leaves us and Leeds to fight it out. My thoughts being that Mondays Boro v Leeds match will be pivotal. Leeds win, gives them momentum to beat QPR and leave us too much to do. A Leeds defeat/draw allows us to lose either the Hull or Coventry game, providing we beat Huddersfield. The season hinges on Monday!

Leeds game is massive, they lose and we need 5 points from our last 3 games.Dont think its going to be that simple though, its going down to last day drama although i hope and pray its like last year, going into the final game when the result doesnt matter!

It’s only top 3, as I mentioned several ago, Southampton had games in hand but that doesn’t equate to points on the board! The remaining games are intriguing and the sequence of them very exciting . We ourselves will have a clearer picture of what’s needed for automatic promotion when Leeds play their next two fixtures! Those that are saying, will our remaining 3 games and we are up, well football doesn’t normally work to such simplistic theories or facts! Plenty more points will be dropped, and the twist and turns will carry on until all games are eventually concluded! It’s been an incredible last couple of seasons, and well overdue for suffering fans under the Evans era!

I feel that these results are key in that it leaves Southampton with no wriggle room from here; they must win all 3 of their games now to even have an unlikely chance of the automatics from here, including at Leicester on Wednesday and Leeds on the final day. I fear that Leeds will get it together on Monday night & beat Middlesbrough, which may well leave us hoping that Southampton 'do us a favour' on the last day, if we drop points at Hull or Coventry. With Leeds' superior goal difference, Southampton's chance will have gone, if Leeds win the next 2, & therefore Martin will rest their better players ahead of the playoffs.
In one sense, I felt Southampton getting a draw at Cardiff would be a better result for us. Having said that, if they don't win at Leicester, it's all academic anyway.
Looking further down the table, results yesterday have made it now look like Huddersfield could be relegated before they play us on the last day. At the very least they will likely need to win, which means they'll have to come out & play, rather than sit play defensively looking to contain us. That should suit us on what will surely start out as a very nervy occasion.

cant believe its all so tight still , reckon last day supporters of 3 clubs at top will have chewed their finger nails down to their elbows . Lets hope we can get our game back to how we were earlier in season and get the goals needed to get us over the line . COYB

Too many permutations to get my head around. This could go down to last match of season against Huddersfield, so I hope by then that they are already relegated and nothing to fight for. Whatever the outcome I've enjoyed our fantastic journey up to this point.

Anything could happen and there will be some more ups and downs before the final curtain
In the prediction league .I had Leeds as champions with two points ahead of Leicester and us one the same points with Leicester going up with a better goal difference. Obviously I hope its all wrong but i did it over a month ago.

Do you know what, honestly, I think I have enjoyed this season so much I wouldn’t mind if we didn’t go up. Obviously I want the Town to go up but it is going to mean a huge change in players, expectations and excitement. Is this a stupid thought to have?

Coolhand…agree with you…it’s a chance for massive success. Are we ready? Will wages have to double…treble..will be an another Burnley. Will we lose KMcK if we stay in the Champoinship. As a supporter for over 60 years I think it will be a season too early for us. If you’re asked to develop at a pace your staff and players aren’t capable of dealing with then just take a breath and re group. Guess I won’t get many supporters agreeing with me.

Are we ready ? - I would hope so now we have a proper management team in place and by that I mean the owners downwards. Wages will have to rise to attract the calibre of player required to compete but I am sure discussions will have already been had on that score. As for KMcK staying with the club, I see no reason why he would want to leave, even if we dont go up. Look what happened to the likes of Graham Potter. He is not daft and knows where his bread is buttered. I hope so anyway.
