Sunderland, Brentford and Ipswich Town receive boost in pursuit of Bolton Wanderers star

The three clubs rumoured to be in pursuit of young defender Harry Brockbank have received a boost in the form of his absence from Bolton Wanderers’ list of contracted players

Sunderland, Brentford and Ipswich Town have all been linked with moves for the 20-year-old, who ascended the ranks of Bolton’s academy.

The Trotters, now of League One following relegation from the Championship, look set to lose their young prodigy as a result of their financial plight as it appears that Brockbank is no longer under contract at the University of Bolton Stadium. The list of contracted players, released this morning, contained just fourteen names.

If Brockbank has indeed left his boyhood club, it would mean that he would be available on a free transfer.

The Bolton-born defender was handed three first-team appearances by manager Phil Parkinson last season and also made one appearance for Salford City, then of the National League, in a brief loan stint.

Brentford, in particular, are renowned for their development of young talent and Bees boss Thomas Frank may see Brockbank as a player that could develop into a key figure for the London side.

For Ipswich, it is a case of rebuilding following relegation to the third tier, and Paul Lambert may look to form a nucleus that is young and boasts potential.

Sunderland, on the other hand, will be looking to build on a squad that came agonisingly close to escaping League One last season. Brockbank is known for his versatility and his ability to operate at right-back could plug the gap left by Adam Matthews’ recent departure.

Meanwhile, disgruntled Bolton supporters will now be casting a cautious eye towards the future after it was announced that the club’s administrators have identified a preferred new owner.
