Taylor: The Real Success is Players Coming Through Into the First Team
Thursday, 25th Apr 2019 16:40

Assistant boss Stuart Taylor wishes the Blues’ U18s and U23s well in their play-off games over the course of the next few days but says developing players for the first team is more important than winning trophies at those levels.

The U18s finished second in their version of the Professional Development League Two South, while the U23s topped their table.

The younger group, coached by Adem Atay and Kieron Dyer, face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough in their play-off semi-final on Saturday morning (KO 11am), while the U23s, whose coaches are Gerard Nash and Chris Hogg, host Birmingham City at Portman Road next Tuesday (KO 7pm).

“In all honesty, that’s the real success, who comes through to the first team,” Taylor said. “Winning games in the U18s and U23s is nice, but that’s not the main part of it.

“The main part of it is how many player are you getting up to U23 level or how many players you’re getting into first team level.

“Idris El Mizouni is a massive success, so’s Jack Lankester, Corrie Ndaba has been up training so much with the first team as well.

“That’s how we gauge success, from how many players come through into the first team. Certainly there’s been success at this football club, that’s what makes it so unique and the amount of players that come through and establish themselves, that’s what it’s all about.”

Reflecting on the prospect of end-of-season trophies, he added: “It’s great, it is nice, but if you’ve got a decision to make on your U23s getting into cup finals and nobody coming through to the first team, I wouldn’t have that, I’d rather have them coming through into the first team and the results and stuff like that secondary.

“Yes, you want to build a winning mentality but the most important part of development is getting players through to a higher level to go and challenge themselves and get into the first team.”

Taylor is certain players yet to make an impression on the first team will emerge next season in addition to those already in and around the senior side.

“Yes, without a doubt,” he said. “Players dictate it themselves, if they’re doing well enough they get promoted, the progression’s there and they end up playing at a higher level. If that’s U18 players in the U23s or U23s in the first team, then fantastic.”

What about Nydam? He seemed to be doing pretty well already last season.

The current group of Academy youngsters are a lucky bunch. It must surely be easier to push on into the first team squad in Div 1 under the present management than at any time since the 1970s. How many will grab it with both hands will be interesting to see.

I'm not sure I agree with this totally. Taylor admits, and I agree, that success is measured by the lads breaking into the first team. But they ARE already breaking through to the first team, as Taylor admits, and all indications are that this will continue. So it's not a matter of either development or success in youth competitions. In the big scheme of things, title races in the yoofs are good to test the mettle of the lads, and all things being equal, AND THEY ARE, success in youth competition is better than failure in them.

Of course, if this is just an effort to lessen the pressure on the lads, forget everything I just said. :)

Yes ,success in the age groups should not be secondary to players coming through. I would like to think that success at those levels will mean that we are more likely to have young players coming through as they will be showing themselves to be better than young players at other clubs .......

never read as much rubbish in my life , just another excuse not to invest in players , club been saying this over and over for the last 5 / 6 years and here we are closer to non league than premiership football than ever before . , End of last season we heard it's all about young , hungry players , then we let them out on loan , bought 24 / 25 yr olds not young in football terms , if your playing 3 rd division football at that age , next stop is a painting , decorating course at the end of your contract , so enough excuses and blarney and go buy some decent players

Also a sign of players leaving last summer, injuries and the players that were signed not making the grade (from Hurst) - so where else to turn?...and still big question marks over some as they haven't been up to Championship standard will they be at League one?

we are in the 3rd division so they will clearly get chances. how we managed to end up in the 3rd should be the subject of a royal inquisition...

As already been said it's not difficult to break into this first team bearing in mind the current standard of the first team squad. Will be interesting to see how many of the youngsters actually grasp a place assuming they are given an opportunity.

Only time will tell if these guys are good enough for league 1. In theory, players like Drinan and Morris should be scoring goals for fun at that level.

Not sure the current regime can claim a great deal of credit for the emergence of young talent at the club. In fact, not sure they are responsible for very much in what is, after all, a results business.

Steve D & other such critics about time you changed your allegiance to another club, you got your way with MM, but look at Bolton & remember when we tried to buy success with George Burley & remember also that is why we have M Evans.

Bing boast , why would I change allegiance when I actually care about where we are , your clearly happy languishing in lower league football with no hope ever of playing premiership football , ,As for Bolton it's fairly rare in fact I can think of just themselves and Portsmouth in what eight to ten years and we did gain success under George Burley , in fact spending 2 .5 million in the January transfer window for Marcus Stewart while chasing premiership football seemed to work if I remember

i agree with Steve-D , just a disguised admission that no investment will be forthcoming. Last season people were calling for the youngsters to be played ,they were going to save us .......they didnt meet the standard required [no fault of theirs] and they will struggle again next season .
