Sheffield United are returning to the Championship having broken some unwanted Premier League records in the 2023/24 season.

The Blades are the first Premier League side in a 38-game season to concede 100 goals following a horrendous campaign in the top-flight.

The division's bottom club saw their fate sealed after a 5-1 defeat to Newcastle at the end of April but they've not managed to stop the rot.

However, Chris Wilder's men are not outright the leakiest defence in Premier League history ahead of their final top-flight games.

Who has conceded the most goals in a Premier League season?

Swindon Town are the only other team to have shipped triple digits for goals against in a Premier League season.

Unfortunately for Sheffield United, that feat was achieved in a 42-game season in the 1993/94 campaign.

That means that the Yorkshire outfit already boasts the worst goals per game conceded and one more in their final two matches of this season will see them overtake Swindon overall.

Ipswich Town round out the podium having let in 93 goals, but like Swindon, it also came in one of the Premier League's three 42-game seasons before the current format of 20 teams came in from 1995/96.

Before Sheffield United, Derby County's 2007/08 side held the record for the most goals conceded in a 38-game season.

Only two teams in Premier League history have ever conceded the most goals in a single season and avoided the drop.

Fulham let in 60 goals in the 2006/07 campaign on route to finishing 16th, while Charlton Athletic conceded the same amount and were relegated.

In 2017/18, West Ham allowed a joint league-high 68 goals with Stoke. The Hammers went on to finish 13th but the Potters went down.
