Former Ipswich Town defender Sammy Moore, who was part of the side who lifted the FA Youth Cup in 2005, has been appointed the new manager of Hythe Town.

The 36-year-old succeeds Steve Watt who left the Isthmian League South East Division side earlier this month with the Cannons sitting 13th in the table.

Moore was sacked as Faversham Town boss at the start of the year after 52 games in charge, despite sitting at the summit of the ninth-tier division at the time.

He now joins the Kent side who have three games left to play in the eight-tier, this season with his first game away at Broadbridge Heath tomorrow.

“The club are delighted to announce the appointment of local non-league manager Sammy Moore as the successor to fans’ favourite Steve Watt,” said chairman Gary Johnson.

“Sammy brings experience, enthusiasm and charisma as well as living a stones throw from Reachfields and his management team will include his long-time friend and UEFA B coach Darren Beale with the possibility of a further new face to be confirmed."

He continued: “The first challenge is to complete the season with a depleted squad suffering from injuries and availability issues.

“He and his management team will then begin the process of building and shaping a new squad for the 2024-25 season.

“The club had a wealth of applications from the very experienced non-league scene, right through to former Premier League players, oh and of course the funny ones too.

“Having shortlisted three exciting candidates, the board agreed unanimously on the appointment of Sammy Moore and look forward to renewed vigour.

“I’m sure you will offer Sammy and his management team a very warm welcome.”

Moore made just one substitute appearance for Town in a 3-1 win against Sunderland at Portman Road, before leaving the club to join Stevenage in 2008.

He went on to have spells with AFC Wimbledon and Leyton Orient in the Football League before going into coaching, where he has also managed Leatherhead, Concord Rangers and Hemel Hempstead Town.
